Join San Francisco’s Healthy Nail Salon Program - a free and voluntary program open to all nail salons in the city.

The goal of the Healthy Nail Salon Program is to help nail salon employees and residents reduce their exposure to the toxic chemicals in nail products. The benefits of the Healthy Nail Salon Program include:

  • The potential to attract new customers
  • Improved health and well-being of staff
  • Safer salon environment for customers
  • Marketing and promotion by SF Environment

Process of Recognition:

Nail salons will be recognized as a Healthy Nail Salon after completing a three-step process:

  1. Attend free training: SF Environment coordinator conducts a free 45-minute training session with all nail salon employees. The training can be held at the salon and in the language(s) that salon employees speak.
  2. Complete checklist: salon owners and employees work together to make sure all the criteria on the checklist are met. Criteria include purchasing safer products, implementing worker safety practices, disposing of chemicals safely, and installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  3. Participate in assessment: salon owner requests a site visit from SF Environment coordinator. Once all the criteria are met, the salon will be recognized as a Healthy Nail Salon.

To stand out from other salons, Healthy Nail Salons receive a plaque, a window decal, and certificates for all employees.

Salons are also listed on SF Environment’s website, newsletters, and social media.
